Reflection Self-Assessment
After a product is completed, students would write a reflection that could double as an assessment and artist statement. They could also record this reflection verbally, because the writing is not as important as the message. Many artist talks are not conducted in writing; they are done as a video or verbal presentation.

Summative or Formative? This exercise lends itself to being formative, because the students are assessing themselves and learning how to better their practice next time. However, if the teacher agrees with the student’s assessment, they may use it as their own assessment of the product. A student’s reflection can also give us insight into effort that might not be readily seen in the product, and that could affect the grade or level of achievement we want to assign.
Strengths:
Students can reflect on challenges they faced while conducting the work, and how they either overcame the challenge or ideas they have now that they wish they had tried.
Students can explain the work behind the product, which is good communication to the teacher and parents.
If there is a technical skill being highlighted within the assignment, students can focus on that skill in regards to their self-assessment. They may be proud of their work for other reasons and this exercise gives them a chance to express that but also think critically about a particular technique. They see how their work can be good, but still able to improve.
Weaknesses:
Some students may need questions or prompts in order to think critically about their work. Because art can be emotional and abstract, many people have a hard time explaining or discussing it.
Students may have a difficult time connecting their learning from one assignment to the next/ other tasks because the idea and technique is not the same.
There may be a misconception that the reflection should only focus on the positive because they feel this will earn them a better assessment from the teacher. Ensure that everyone understands how healthy self-criticism is vital to learning.
